ChatGPT vs Claude for writing
Both cost about $20 a month at the tier most writers need. The differences are in context length, workspace features and where your drafts end up.
How this page was made: this is a research-based comparison built from official pricing pages, product documentation and vendor announcements. We have not run hands-on benchmarks for this page, and we don't invent scores. Our methodology.
ChatGPT (from OpenAI) and Claude (from Anthropic) are the two general-purpose AI assistants writers use most for brainstorming, outlining, drafting and editing. Both have free tiers, a roughly $20/month individual plan, and much more expensive tiers for heavy users.
We compared them on what each company publishes about its plans: price, how much text the model can work with at once (the context window), project workspaces, research features and integrations with Word and Google Docs. Which one “writes better” depends on your prompts, genre and taste, and changes with every model update, so we don’t pretend to settle that here. Both have free tiers, so the best test is to give each the same brief.
Short answer
Choose ChatGPT if you want one assistant that also does images, custom GPTs and deep research, plus a cheaper Go tier and Word/Google Docs extensions. Choose Claude if you work with very long documents (Anthropic lists context windows of up to 1M tokens on some models), want projects even on the free plan, or prefer a slightly cheaper annual Pro plan ($17/mo billed yearly).

Verdict
For most writers the deciding factor is workflow, not price. If you draft long manuscripts, reports or research-heavy pieces and want to paste in whole documents, Claude’s large context windows and Projects are the stronger fit. If you want an all-purpose assistant that also handles images, deep research and custom GPTs, or you mostly write in Google Docs, ChatGPT is the more complete package. Both have free tiers: run the same brief through each before paying. For SEO-driven blogging, pair either with a dedicated tool from our best AI SEO tools guide.

Which to use for common writing jobs
- Blog posts and newsletters: either works. Save a style guide and sample posts in a Project (both offer them) so drafts stay consistent.
- Long-form (books, reports, theses): Claude’s larger published context windows let you work with more of a manuscript at once.
- Research-heavy articles: both have research modes (ChatGPT deep research; Claude Research on Pro). Always verify the citations they return.
- Marketing teams with brand voice needs: consider a dedicated platform; see our Jasper alternatives.
- Grammar and polish: a dedicated editor may be cheaper; see Grammarly alternatives.
