How this page was made: this is a research-based comparison built from official pricing pages, product documentation and vendor announcements. We have not run hands-on benchmarks for this page, and we don't invent scores. Our methodology.

Descript is a video and audio editor built around the transcript: record or import media, and Descript transcribes it so you can cut, rearrange and clean up by editing text. On top of that it layers AI features, including an AI co-editor called Underlord, filler-word removal, AI voices, caption translation and (on Business) dubbing.

This review is research-based, drawn from Descript’s official pricing and help pages (checked October 2026). We haven’t benchmarked Descript’s transcription accuracy or export speed, so we don’t publish scores.

Our verdict

Descript is one of the most approachable editors for spoken-word content: podcasts, talking-head YouTube videos, tutorials and course lessons. Its transcript-first workflow removes most of the timeline learning curve. The trade-offs are its usage-based limits (media hours and AI credits), a 720p cap on the free plan, and a toolset that’s less suited to effects-heavy short-form edits. Most solo creators will land on Hobbyist ($16/mo annual) or Creator ($24/mo annual).

Alternatives to consider

For short-form social video, CapCut and Microsoft Clipchamp are cheaper or free; see best AI video editors for beginners. If you mostly need AI voiceovers rather than editing, see best AI voice generators.
