ElevenLabs started as a text-to-speech company and is now a broad AI audio platform. Its consumer product, ElevenCreative, covers text to speech, speech to text, voice cloning, dubbing, a voice changer, voice isolation, sound effects, music and, more recently, image and video. Separate pricing tracks exist for ElevenAgents (conversational voice agents) and the ElevenAPI.

This review focuses on the self-serve ElevenCreative plans most creators buy. It is based on ElevenLabs’ official pricing page and FAQ as of October 2026, not on hands-on audio benchmarks.

Our verdict

ElevenLabs is the safest default for most people who need AI narration, because one subscription covers voiceover, cloning, dubbing and sound design, and commercial rights start on the $6 Starter plan. It gets expensive if you lean on dubbing or the voice changer, which consume credits many times faster than plain text to speech. If you only need lots of English narration, cheaper alternatives exist.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • One credit pool covers TTS, cloning, dubbing, sound effects and music
  • Commercial license from $6/month
  • Professional Voice Cloning from $22/month
  • Unused credits roll over for up to two months on active paid plans
  • Annual billing is effectively two months free

Cons

  • Credit costs differ a lot by feature, which makes budgeting harder
  • Downgrading or cancelling forfeits unused credits
  • Free plan has no commercial license
  • Introductory discounts change often, so the first-month price may differ from the renewal price

Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

Good fit

  • YouTubers, podcasters and course creators who want narration plus cloning in one tool
  • Creators who publish in several languages (74 listed)
  • Small teams that want shared seats (Scale: 3, Business: 10)
  • Developers prototyping on the same account they use in the studio

Look elsewhere if

  • Anyone needing many hours of narration per month on a small budget (see Speechify Studio)
  • Teams that iterate heavily on scripts and want unlimited re-generation (see WellSaid)
  • Heavy dubbing users on low tiers: dubbing costs 2,000–10,000 credits per minute

How ElevenLabs credits work

Every plan gets a monthly credit allowance shared across all products. Using one feature leaves fewer credits for the others. ElevenLabs publishes approximate costs:

Approximate credit costs (ElevenLabs FAQ, Oct 2026)
FeatureCredit cost
Text to speech (Multilingual v2)1 credit per character
Text to speech (Flash/Turbo via API)0.5–1 credit per character
Speech to text330 credits per minute
Music900 credits per minute
Sound effects200 credits per generation
Voice changer / voice isolator1,000 credits per minute
Dubbing2,000–10,000 credits per minute (depends on automatic vs Dubbing Studio, and watermark)

A quick rule of thumb: on the default model, 1,000 characters is about one minute of speech, so the Creator plan’s 121,000 credits is a little over two hours of narration if you spend it all on text to speech. ElevenLabs charges per generation rather than per download, though it offers a limited number of free regenerations when the text and settings don’t change.

Monthly vs annual billing

Annual billing costs 10× the monthly price. The equivalent monthly prices are $5 (Starter), $18.33 (Creator), $82.50 (Pro), $249.17 (Scale) and $825 (Business). If you know you will use ElevenLabs for a year, annual is the better deal; if you are testing, start monthly because unused credits are forfeited when you downgrade.

Which ElevenLabs plan should you pick?

  • Starter ($6): occasional narration for monetized videos, plus instant voice cloning.
  • Creator ($22): weekly YouTube or podcast output, or if you want a Professional Voice Clone of your own voice.
  • Pro ($99): audiobooks, courses or API use where you need around 10 hours a month and higher-quality output.
  • Scale/Business: teams that need shared seats and multiple professional clones.
